Galle
Sri Lanka
Galle Fort, the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, anchors this coastal city on Sri Lanka's southwestern tip. Originally fortified by the Portuguese in the 16th century and extensively rebuilt by the Dutch from 1649 onwards, the fort's old town holds a concentration of historic churches alongside landmarks including St. Mary's Cathedral, the National Maritime Museum, and the Amangalla hotel. The Galle International Stadium, rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami, hosts international cricket test matches.
