Thermal spa village in the Ariège Pyrenees with more than sixty hot springs, Ax-les-Thermes also operates a winter ski area — Ax 3 Domaines, established in December 1955 — a short distance up into the mountains. The 14th-century Bassin des Ladres, a listed historic monument, sits at the village centre. The upper Ariège valley setting, drained by several rivers, offers mountain scenery and access to excursions, and the village carries an unusually lively café and restaurant scene for its size.
