On the eastern shore of Lake Vättern in Östergötland, Vadstena is a small Swedish city — it received city privileges in 1400 — whose skyline is defined by its castle and monastery church. The medieval street pattern survives largely intact, with low buildings and narrow lanes dating from the Middle Ages through the 18th and 19th centuries, and the town supports a café and restaurant scene well above what its size would suggest.
