Tursi is a little city in Basilicata's Matera province with scenic views over the surrounding landscape and a strong visual character that rewards photography. Its history runs deep: the urban centre developed around a castle from the 5th century, and in 968 it became the Byzantine capital of the theme of Lucania and a Greek-rite episcopal see. By 1601 it was the most populous city in its provincial district, and it later served as administrative seat for much of Basilicata, with jurisdiction extending to the Ionian coast.
