A particularly photogenic hill town in Calabria's Pollino National Park, Morano Calabro is listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia — Italy's most beautiful villages — and carries a dense concentration of historic churches for its size. The town developed along the upper valley of the Coscile river at the foot of the Pollino massif, flourishing through the medieval and Renaissance periods under the Sanseverino di Bisignano lordship. It was the birthplace of mathematician Gaetano Scorza.
