The main town and municipal seat of Samsø island, Tranebjerg has a 14th-century Gothic church, the earthwork remains of a royal castle burned down in 1289, and an Ecomuseum tracing the island's history from the Stone Age through to traditional farming life. For a small island town it has a reasonable spread of cafés and restaurants, a tourist office, and scenic surroundings on the southern part of the island.
