Horsens
Denmark
A fjord-side city in eastern Jutland with a walkable, pedestrianised centre dense with cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, Horsens sits at the inner end of a long shallow inlet framed by rolling hills and forests. First mentioned in the 12th century, it grew into a significant medieval town with monasteries and later became a merchants' city, as evidenced by surviving patrician buildings. A former state prison in the north of the city now operates as a concert venue and cultural centre called Fængslet.
