Sitting on the shores of Lake Mastis in northwestern Lithuania, Telšiai is the historic capital of the Samogitia region, with a compact centre — itself a designated urban monument — where cafés and restaurants cluster around a preserved Old Town. One of Lithuania's oldest cities, it likely predates the 14th century. Cultural institutions include the regional museum Alka, founded in 1932, a drama theatre, and a faculty of Vilnius Academy of Arts.
