A walkable town on the Tisa River in western Ukraine's Zakarpattia Oblast, Rakhiv sits higher than any other town in the country and serves as a base for the Carpathian mountains nearby. The centre has a real café and restaurant scene, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. Part of the historic Hutsulshchyna cultural region, it draws independent travellers looking for mountain access in an area that sees relatively little international tourism.
