Martel

Lot · France

Known since the 17th century as "the town of seven towers," Martel is a medieval village in the Lot department of southwestern France, founded in the 11th century as a salt-market settlement at a crossroads on lands belonging to the Viscounts of Turenne. For over five centuries it served as the capital of the Quercy portion of the Viscount of Turenne's territory. Today it is a member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and a recognised site for walnut, truffle, and preserve trading, with a café and restaurant scene that would suit a town twice its size.
