Lascaux Cave, one of the world's most celebrated prehistoric painted caves, sits just outside this tiny village on the Vézère river in the Dordogne, making Montignac-Lascaux a natural base for exploring the wider Vézère Valley — a region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites. The village itself has a lively café and restaurant scene for its size, sits right on the river, and was the birthplace of the 19th-century poet Pierre Lachambeaudie.
