A tiny town in eastern Lithuania within the Aukštaitija National Park, Ignalina sits beside several lakes — including Šiekštys and Gavys — and serves as a base for the surrounding lake district. The town has a winter sports centre and a railway station on the St. Petersburg–Warsaw line. The now-decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, located near the city of Visaginas, takes its name from the town despite being some distance away.
