A town in Upper Lusatia, Saxony, Hoyerswerda sits among the lakes, marshes, and waterways of the Lusatian landscape, with cycling and skating paths threading between the water. The Old Town holds the historic centre, while the bilingual character of the area — German and Upper Sorbian — reflects the town's place in the traditional settlement territory of the Sorbs, a Slavic cultural minority whose heritage remains visible here. Dresden lies within easy reach to the northeast.
