A compact subprefecture in the Lot department of southwestern France, Gourdon sits at the heart of the Bouriane — a forested, hilly natural region of the Quercy — and is surrounded by a high concentration of prehistoric sites. Built on a prominent hill that once held the stronghold of the powerful Fortanier de Gourdon feudal family, the town is close to Rocamadour and within reach of the wider Dordogne valley, a region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
