This pocket-sized town on the shore of a lake in south-eastern Estonia, Võru has a walkable central core with cafés and restaurants and a house-museum dedicated to Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, the 19th-century collector of Estonian epic poetry and a founder of Estonian literature. Founded on 21 August 1784 by decree of the Governor-General of the Riga Viceroyalty, the town's historic centre is protected as a heritage conservation area.
