Estonia's self-styled winter capital, Otepää is a pocket-sized town in the hills of Valga County known as the country's leading skiing resort, hosting FIS Cross-Country World Cup events from the 2005–2006 season. Lake Pühajärv lies at the southern edge of town, offering a beach and waterside path. The town also holds the ruins of Otepää Castle on Linnamägi hill, a Winter Sports Museum, and a church with a memorial to those who fell in the Estonian War of Independence.
