Vecrīga (Old Riga) is the medieval historic core of Latvia's capital, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and awarded the European Heritage Label in 2007 for its skyline and silhouette. The neighbourhood is dense with old churches — among them Riga Cathedral, St. James's Cathedral, and St. Peter's Church — and sits along the east bank of the Daugava River, with scenic views across the water. It has been a protected zone since 1967.
