Jelgava
Latvia
Once the capital of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia from 1578 to 1795, Jelgava is a Latvian city on the Lielupe river with a compact centre holding a concentration of cafés and restaurants. A short drive southwest of Riga, it is the largest city in the Semigallia region and traces its origins to a castle built in 1265. The surrounding flat plain is prone to flooding at high water.
