Latvia's largest resort town, Jūrmala stretches along a long white-sand beach facing the Gulf of Riga, with the Lielupe River running behind it. A popular destination since the 19th century, it became a favoured retreat for senior Soviet officials during the USSR era, and the wooden Art Nouveau houses from that earlier resort period remain a feature of the townscape. It sits a short distance west of Riga.
