Suomenlinna
Finland
Built across eight islands just off central Helsinki, Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage sea fortress whose construction began in 1748 under the Swedish Crown. Known as Sveaborg in Swedish, it surrendered to Russian forces in 1808 after a two-month siege — an event that helped pave the way for Russia's annexation of Finland the following year. Today the islands are home to several hundred residents, multiple cafés and restaurants, and year-round cultural events, reached by ferry from the city centre.
