A large district on Istanbul's European side, Sultangazi is home to the Alibey Reservoir, built between 1975 and 1983, where amateur fishing and water sports take place amid protected woodland. The district was carved out in 2008 from parts of neighbouring Gaziosmanpaşa, Eyüpsultan, and Esenler, and its name combines a reference to a former imperial farm with the Turkish word for a venerated war veteran. Its population includes Kurdish and Alevi communities, Bulgarian and former Yugoslav immigrants, and migrants from Turkey's Black Sea region.
