Kadıköy is the Asian-side district of Istanbul with one of the city's densest concentrations of cafés, bars, bookshops, and restaurants, spread across a waterfront neighbourhood that faces the historic European city centre across the Bosphorus. Known in antiquity as Chalcedon — once called the "city of the blind" — it has been settled since before the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. Today its bazaars, street art, and independent cinemas make it the liberal cultural hub of Istanbul's Anatolian side, while Bağdat Avenue ranks among Turkey's most significant shopping streets.
