One of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Stolac sits on the water in mountain terrain in the Herzegovina region, with vineyards in the surrounding area and a pocket-sized central core of cafés and restaurants. It lies on a tourist route linking Sarajevo and Mostar with the Adriatic coast, and a road completed in 2022 connects it directly to the coastal town of Neum.
