This tiny town in Herzegovina-Neretva Canton where the Neretva river runs through the centre before crossing into Croatia and reaching the Adriatic, Čapljina sits in wine-growing country close to the Croatian border. Hutovo Blato Park, on the town's doorstep, holds one of Europe's most diverse bird populations. The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi and a statue of King Tomislav are the main landmarks in the compact centre, which has cafés and restaurants.
