This modest town on the banks of the Ölfusá river is the largest in South Iceland, with a compact central core of cafés and restaurants that makes it a practical and pleasant base for exploring the region. Sitting on Route 1 between Reykjavik and the south coast, Selfoss is close to mountains and within reach of UNESCO-listed sites in the wider area.
