Laugarvatn

A small lakeside hamlet in southern Iceland with a geothermally heated pool fed by the lake's hot spring — the same waters where, according to tradition, some pagans were baptised after Iceland's conversion to Christianity in 1000 AD, and where the body of executed bishop Jón Arason was washed in 1550. Despite its size, it supports a modest cluster of cafés and restaurants, and sits within reach of the wider region's UNESCO World Heritage sites.
