Germany Salzlandkreis

Schönebeck

Salzlandkreis · Germany

A riverside town on the left bank of the Elbe in Saxony-Anhalt, Schönebeck has a compact centre with cafés and restaurants and sits a short distance southeast of Magdeburg. The town was long associated with a large salt mine that defined much of its twentieth-century identity, and its surroundings offer scenic viewpoints across the river valley. A munitions factory opened here by Sellier & Bellot in 1829 adds an industrial layer to its history.
