Aschersleben

Salzlandkreis · Germany

Claimed to be the oldest documented town in Saxony-Anhalt, Aschersleben sits at the northeastern edge of the Harz mountains in the valley of the Eine river, and is sometimes called the "Gateway to the Harz." The town retains a well-preserved medieval fortification system and a largely intact medieval centre, both uncommon survivals in Germany. It was a seat of the Ascanian dynasty in the 12th century and later a Hanseatic member, and today the walkable centre has a real café and restaurant scene.
