This waterfront town on the French Caribbean island of Martinique, Schœlcher sits where mountain terrain meets the coast, with cafés and restaurants concentrated in a compact centre. Named Case-Navire until 1889, it was renamed in honour of Victor Schœlcher, the French abolitionist writer. One of Martinique's larger communes, it sits within reach of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
