Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique on the Caribbean coast, centres on the Bay of Fort-de-France — one of the largest natural bays in the Lesser Antilles — with a walkable waterfront promenade lined with bars and restaurants in a French Caribbean atmosphere. La Savane, a tropical park, sits alongside the centre, while the 17th-century Fort Saint-Louis, still an active French naval installation and listed historical monument, dominates the seafront. Cruise ships and merchant vessels dock at the port to the east.
