This pocket-sized Portuguese city on the Dão river in wine-growing country, Santa Comba Dão is best known as the birthplace of António de Oliveira Salazar, who led Portugal from 1932 to 1968 and founded the Estado Novo regime. He was born in the parish of Vimieiro on 28 April 1889. The surrounding area offers vineyard scenery and river views, and the wider region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
