Salaspils

Latvia

A town on the northern bank of the Daugava river, Salaspils sits a short distance south-east of Riga, with easy rail and road connections making it a practical base for the capital. Its modern form grew up alongside the construction of the Riga Hydroelectric Power Station, and the historical settlement of Salaspils now lies submerged beneath the reservoir created by that project. The town received city rights in 1993.
