Roskilde
Denmark
Roskilde's UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral — completed in 1275 and housing the tombs of 39 Danish monarchs — anchors this town on the shores of Roskilde Fjord, a short distance west of Copenhagen. The Viking Ship Museum displays five well-preserved 11th-century vessels recovered from the fjord. Each summer the city swells for the internationally known Roskilde Festival, one of Europe's major rock music events. The walkable centre has two pedestrian streets lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops.
