Known across Ecuador as "Ciudad Azul" — the Blue City — Pelileo is a town in the Andean highlands of Tungurahua province whose denim industry has made it one of the country's main centres for jeans production. Founded in 1570 and rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1949, it sits on the eastern slopes of the Andes in the Patate river valley, with mountain views and the river within walking distance.
