Pécs
Hungary
Pécs holds more Ottoman-era buildings than any other city in Central Europe, including the mosque of Gazi Kasim Pasha still standing on the main square — a legacy of 150 years of Turkish rule layered over a Roman foundation whose 4th-century Christian necropolis earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Hungary's oldest university gives the city an active student presence, and the surrounding Mecsek hills offer scenic viewpoints above a centre dense with cafés, Gothic and Baroque architecture, and the celebrated Zsolnay ceramics tradition.
