Coal mining shaped Komló through much of the 20th century, transforming what had been a hop-growing village into one of Hungary's major mining centres during the socialist era, when it was formally designated a town in 1951. The town's name derives from the Hungarian word for hops, a crop depicted on its heraldry by the 18th century. Today Komló serves as the main economic and administrative hub of northern Baranya county, with the thermal resort village of Sikonda among its associated settlements.
