Kaposvár

This walkable county capital in southwestern Hungary, south of Lake Balaton, with a centre full of cafés and churches. Kaposvár sits along the Kapos river and has been an ecclesiastical centre since 1061; its medieval castle and Benedictine monastery were seized by Ottoman forces in 1555 and the city remained under occupation until 1686. The wider region includes UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the city today hosts a university, theatres, and festivals.
