Maratea
Potenza · Italy
Basilicata's only town on the Tyrrhenian coast, Maratea is a particularly photogenic pocket-sized town with an unusual concentration of churches and chapels — local tradition counts 44 — set above scenic coastal viewpoints. Its compact centre has cafés and restaurants, and the surrounding coastline on the Gulf of Policastro is within walking distance. Listed among I Borghi più belli d'Italia, the town holds a title of "Città" traceable to a 1531 decree signed by Charles V of Habsburg.
