Founded around 1444 by Albanian stradioti soldiers sent by George Castriot Skanderbeg to aid the King of Aragon, Mezzojuso is a Sicilian hill village southeast of Palermo that still carries its Albanian-Arbëreshë heritage in its Byzantine-rite churches and traditional festivals. Known historically as the "Athens of the Albanian colonies," it sits on the eastern slope of Rocca Busambra and retains several historic churches for a settlement of its size, alongside vineyards in the surrounding countryside.
