Medininkai, a village southeast of Vilnius near the Lithuania-Belarus border, draws visitors to the ruins of a medieval castle — once among the most important in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — now operating as a museum, and to Aukštojas, the highest natural point in Lithuania. In 1387, Grand Duke Jogaila founded one of the country's first churches here. The village reached its peak in the late 15th century before gradually declining to its present rural character.
