A French Caribbean island where the volcano Mount Pelée dominates the northern landscape — its 1902 eruption destroyed the city of Saint Pierre and killed around 30,000 people, leaving a site that still draws visitors today. The north also holds rainforests and black-sand beaches, while the south offers warmer, tourist-friendly shores. The island's forests and volcanic peaks, including the Pitons du Carbet, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2023, and the entire land and sea territory has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2021. The euro is the currency in use.
