The site of one of the bloodiest engagements of the War of 1812, Lundy's Lane near Niagara Falls, Ontario, saw roughly 1,720 casualties when American and British-Canadian forces fought to a stalemate on 25 July 1814. Designated a National Historic Site in 1937, the battlefield is also referenced in the Canadian patriotic song The Maple Leaf Forever. The area today sits close to the restaurants, cafés, and historic churches of the wider Niagara Falls district.
