La Union

Founded in 1821 under Bernardo O'Higgins to secure Chilean sovereignty south of Valdivia, La Unión is a compact town in the Los Ríos Region with a walkable centre of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches. The commune takes its name from the confluence of the Llollelhue and Radimadi rivers, and the surrounding landscape divides between forested western mountains — where Alerce Costero National Park lies — and agricultural plains to the east. The region is a major dairy-producing area, with COLUN operating as its principal producer.
