Founded in 1558, destroyed in the great Mapuche rebellion of 1598, and refounded in 1793, Osorno is a southern Chilean city at the confluence of the Rahue and Damas rivers whose modern character was shaped largely by German and Austro-Hungarian settlers who built it into Chile's main cattle-farming centre from the mid-19th century. The walkable city centre has a dense café and restaurant scene, and Osorno serves as a gateway for overland access to the far-southern regions of Aysén and Magallanes, as well as a cross-Andes route to the Argentine city of San Carlos de Bariloche.
