Formerly known as Sis, Kozan was the capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, and the fortress built on a long rocky ridge at the centre of the modern city — now called Kozan Kalesi — survives from that era. The Taurus Mountains rise sharply behind the town, and the Kilgen River flows through it toward the Mediterranean. A city in Adana Province, it served as a provincial capital until 1926.
