This lakeside city in Finland's Central Finland region, Jyväskylä is known for its concentration of buildings by architect Alvar Aalto, the annual Rally Finland round of the World Rally Championship, and a walkable centre with a dense café and restaurant scene. Elias Lönnrot, compiler of the Finnish national epic the Kalevala, nicknamed it "the Athens of Finland" for its role as an educational centre. The city sits in the Finnish Lakeland and hosts an annual arts festival.
