This small town in southwestern Slovenia's Inner Carniola region, Ilirska Bistrica sits in the valley of the Reka river at the foot of the Snežnik massif, with a central core of cafés and restaurants and mountain terrain close at hand. Its position near the borders of Istria and the Kvarner coast has long shaped local life, and the wider municipality takes in forested highland, karst valleys, and the Reka river valley.
