This small Atlantic-coast district in south-west County Donegal, Glencolumbkille sits at the edge of the sea with mountain terrain close behind and scenic views across the surrounding peninsula. The area is part of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht and takes its name from Saint Colmcille (Columba), the 6th-century monk born in Donegal who later founded the monastery at Iona. The main settlement is the village of Cashel, and the wider district holds a cluster of prehistoric and early Christian sites.
