A city in Syria's Ghouta region just northeast of Damascus, Douma traces its origins to the Aramaic era and holds a substantial concentration of mosques — more than eighty, including several of historic standing, with the Grand Mosque among the most prominent. Archaeological sites and historic buildings are scattered through the centre. As the administrative capital of Rif Dimashq Governorate, it is also the largest city in the Damascus countryside.
