Bab Sharqi
Syria
The only original Roman gate still standing in Damascus, Bab Sharqi — also called the Gate of the Sun — is the sole survivor among the ancient city's gates to retain its triple-passageway form: a wide central arch for caravans and wheeled traffic flanked by two narrower pedestrian passages. One of seven ancient gates of the old city, it sits in the eastern quarter, within reach of cafés, restaurants, and an unusual concentration of churches for the surrounding area.
